Historical background

This congregation is called the Little sisters of Mary Immaculate of Gulu.

The Founder is Bishop Angelo Negri, Comboni Missionary, who was appointed by the Holy see First Vicar Apostolic of the Vicariate of Equatorial Nile, with seat in Gulu in 1935. In 1936 he was inspired to start a new congregation of African Sisters, making his own a desire already expressed by his Predecessor, Mgr. Antonio Vignato.

The Congregation of the Little Sisters began its life in Gulu. In 1939, the ten girls who wanted to become sisters were placed in the care of Rev. Sister Angioletta Dognini, a Comboni sister who became the Co- Foundress of the congregation. In 1942 December, the new Novitiate was opened in Nyapea. In 1944 the Novitiate was transferred to Gulu. The first profession of the congregation took place on 6 January 1945.

Bishop Angelo Negri had great paternal interest in the development of the congregation and did all he could to make it stand.

He cherished Vocation to Religious Life and Priesthood so much and he always prayed for the increase in vocations so that the light of Christ may shine in the whole world. This cherished treasure is strongly reflected in the life of the Congregation. At the end of each day, LSMIG pray through the intercession of Our Mother Mary for Priest and Seminarians.

When Bishop Negri was giving his last retreat to the sisters in 1949, he stressed to them the importance of humility as a strong pillar in which the Congregation stands. He added that without humility the Congregation would fall; he therefore, encouraged the sisters to emulate Mary, the Mother of Jesus as a Model of Humility.

When he died on 11 November 1949 in Arua, the number of professed sisters was 16. After his death the co-foundress continued to govern the congregation. In 1975 the congregation had its first Superior General from among its own members.

Nature and Aim

This congregation was founded in the missionary church and for missionary service.

The members of the congregation are consecrated by the gratuitous love of God; because of this they follow Christ and imitate His life with a view to saving the world. Their consecration is rooted in baptism and is a full expression of it. For this reason the sisters share in a singular way the life and the mystery of the church in the world of today.

The Spirituality

The congregation derives its specific spirituality from the Heart of Jesus, Our Lady Mary Immaculate, St. Joseph and the Founder.

In the mystery of the heart of Jesus, sisters contemplate Christ innermost attitude and make their own mainly, His burning love for human person without discrimination.

His unconditional giving Himself to Father.

His meekness and humility.

The sisters imitate Mary in her simplicity and purity of soul and body.

Also follow the example of the founder his zeal for Christian education of women. His spirit of love of prayer, kindness and fairness towards everybody.

The Devotion of the LSMIG

Apostolic activities

The Little sisters of Mary Immaculate dedicate themselves to the following activities and works of mercy;

Christian Education in schools mainly for girls.

Pastoral, catechetical and Liturgical works at the parish, diocesan or National level, in union with other pastoral agents.

Works in Medical units, in child welfare and for disabled and handicapped people.

In all activities the sisters keep in mind the needs of the poor and abandoned children.

Religious consecration

Consecrated by God; the sisters understand their consecration as an answer to God’s special call. God calls, transforms and strengthens them with His spirit and sends them to carry His Name to the Nations. They freely accept this call and offer themselves entirely to God by making their whole life an exclusively service to the word of salvation.

The following of Christ.

By consecration the sisters decide to follow Christ, remain with Him and allow to be used as his messengers to the world in order to share His work of salvation. They achieve this by sincere encounter with Christ, in which they discover to have been loved, and so deepen communion with Him.
